Communication is Key

We’re always told communication is key in any relationship, but how important is communication in therapeutic rapport? Rapport is defined as a “harmonious relationship” between two parties (Merriam-Webster, 2023). With communication being the foundation to our most important relationships, it makes sense that they go hand-in-hand.

In fact, 93% of our most important communication is non-verbal. From head shakes to facial responses, it all adds up. With only 7% of our communication being verbal it is important to ensure therapists, and clients are on the same page (Mehrabian & Ferris, 1967). If we’re not, that rapport will be lacking. A good rapport with a client not only means a solid communication system, but was shown to boost a client’s success rate by 25% (Ardito & Rabellino, 2011).

Ways to build communication, and rapport:

  • Have an update about your child? Talk privately about the concerns without your child present. A child can often internalize those shortcomings. Speaking to your child’s therapist alone increases the chance your child will associate therapy as a positive experience.

  • Document topics you want to talk about. Having a list ensures you’re more likely to bring up topics that are important to you.

  • Be up front about any concerns you’re experiencing with your services. If we are unaware of a concern, we can’t fix it.

  • Ask questions. We want to make sure you’re aware of our procedures, and we understand your needs.
