As we head into the colder months, illnesses and inclement weather can pose barriers for patients to attend in-person sessions. Depending on your insurance plan coverage, virtual services may be an option for you! If you're interested in virtual services or are looking for ways to improve your current virtual sessions, I've provided a list of helpful tips below:
Device
o You’ll need a cell phone, tablet, or computer.
o Test your device before your scheduled meeting.
o Keep your device charged and have access to a charger or charge ahead.
o Ensure your device has a working microphone and speaker.
o Confirm you have access to the virtual platform used.
o Have a backup plan. If your device is not working is there another option to use?
Location
o Find a quiet location free of distractions.
o Ensure you have a strong internet connection. Poor service won’t allow for a good session.
o Plan ahead for pets and kids, so you’ll not have distractions.
o Set the vibe: Make sure your location is cozy, lit well, and you have a comfy spot to sit.
o Prepare fidgets, or comfort items as needed.

Schedule
o Don't double book.
o Having back-to-back plans does not set you up for success.
o Give yourself a break, and don’t rush to/from your session.
Safety First
o Ensure you’re in a private spot free from other people hearing your private information.
o If you’re setting up for your child, ensure they have privacy as well.
o Don’t plan on video chatting while operating a motor vehicle.
o Be available if your child is having a session. That does not mean you need to stay in the room, but your child being able to find you if needed is important.
Remember virtual therapy is not for everyone. There is a chance virtual is not a good option for you, or your family. It can be hard to focus on someone if you’re not in the same location. Hearing impairments can also create barriers to treatment. If virtual sessions aren't working well for you, consider some of the above recommendations or talk to your provider about the option to switch to in-person sessions.
